You're right - there was a weatherstrip kit that fit and one that didn't. I think it was Chevy Duty that didn't, but I can't remember. Some of it had to do with the weatherstrip compressing over time, too. I forgot to write it down, so I'll be watching this thread too.
As for the window channel felt, I think the difference between the expensive and cheap kits is that the expensive ones come pre-bent. seems pretty straight-forward to bend a channel to fit your door.
