have a 1976 nova i have an extra wire comin out of fuse box red heavy wire have no idea if it goes to starter or alternater

The heavy red wire to the fuse block connects direct to the battery via a (fuse link).
Usually a junction block is provided and the fuse links are located there.
Make sure you use a fuse link or a Maxi-fuse for this main feed wire.
