I have to pull my 326 to get the oil pump working. The shaft turns irregularly so I guess this means I need to replace it??? Anyway, my son has already started going on about replacing it with a 400. Does anybody have any suggestions here? Is there an easy way to check the CR on the 326 to see if it's any good before I shell out $600 for a 400?

When I turn the keyed shaft with a screw driver it bumps up and down. (This occurred when the previous owner tried to run the engine to the extent that the distibutor jumped up and down). I figure that most likely the pump impeller has sheared (because it turns very easily) or some kind of build/obstruction is interfering with its rotation.
