Other than starting over...how can I improve the attachment of my Nova front clip to a stock 1940 truck frame (poorly installed by previous owner).

Also, other than boxing the frame is there a way to install cross supports to the existing 40' frame and improve the strength. Not building a race car.....just a weekend cruiser.

I, for one, don't hate the way it's installed. The clip is wider than the frame, thus the beast is born.

Do the tires stick out of the fenders? (Can't see if the front tires are mounted in the photo)

The front tires do not stick out past the fenders. The hood and fender set up may be wider than stock but the wheels seem to sit just right with good clearance all around.

Based on what I can see in the photo, and what you are describing, I guess I am not getting the "poorly installed by previous owner". Sounds pretty well thought out.

Are the engine mounts on the crossmember or the frame? The reason I ask is the front crossmember stiffens the frame a huge amount, compared to the stock set up. If the mounts are on the crossmember, or close to it, and you have a decent transmission crossmember, I'd think you are good to go as is.

If you measure everything out and it is square, then I'd box the connecting point differently. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the two frames sitting alongside each other, although they may be strong enough. The blunt ends are not pretty.
I would cut plates that will make a more gradual transition from the two frames, and add them to what you have. Grind off anything that's sticking up past the frame's outter edge, so when you add the transitions it's smooth. These angled plates will further work as gussets and enforce the area further also, plus make it look more professional.
Just taking what you have now and making all the square ends angle out at 45 degrees and boxed closed, will make it all look better, and be stronger. Do the angles on all edges, leading, top, or wherever there's a difference between the subframe and existing frame.

Sounds like I may have options for improving the front clip

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I will definately spend some time modifying and re-supporting the front clip attachment on my 40' truck before considering scrapping the old work. Based on many of your comments, with a little extra welding and frame support work I think what I have is worth saving.
The truck sits nice and level and feels correct on the short quiet trips I've taken around the block. It may not be pretty but I think what has been done by the previous owner was well set up, level and sqaure.

Now I am after an "under bed" gas tank and an after market truck bed.
Hope to be on the road and legal by March 1st.
