I just picked up a '70 Mercedes 250C coupe. That is a small body car, the 114 chassis. The car is immaculate and rust free, but it is real "old tech". York piston a/c compressor, fluid coupling for the tranny instead of a torque convertor, carbs that warp and fail, etc. Mechanical pieces are also too pricey for a car of this value. i.e. fan clutch $238.00.

I thought about newer Mercedes power, but they are heavy on computer control and as far as I know, no one makes a "stand alone" unit for them.

So, it looks like American power (fine with me). Here is the problem, Mercedes have almost no oil pan clearance. An awful lot goes on under he engine.

So, any suggestions? One concern is the rear end, I don't think it can take all that much power. It may have to go because the ratios have it spinning around 3K at 60 mph.

Many over here got fitted with 289/302w Fords as rear sumps can be a problem. Use a final drive out of a w107 350/450sl (3.46 or 3.07:1).If it's a 70 it should have a converter - the converter cars run the trans dipstick on the right, fluid coupling on the left. It may have had a trans swap.
Check the rail around the steering box and the front crossmember at the lower wishbone mounts for cracks. If the heater box has leaks after rain it may have rust in the firewall - these were common problems when they were only 10yo so they won't have improved. If you can find a wrecked 450sl grab the front and rear suspension complete as they bolt in on factory mounts, give you bigger sway bars, brakes, V8 compatible springs, anti-squat rear suspension and a bigger diff in a higher ratio.

Another Australian has suggested that I use a Toyota Supra engine. I would prefer American power, but does anyone know about using the Toyota computer as a "stand alone"? It should be pretty "old tech".

How about a stand alone computer for the new Chevy DOHC six?

supra-schmoopra. A later benz would be easier, An m110 2.8l k-jectronic equipped 6 with a 4spd 'compact' auto will bolt in with standard 114 280e mount,sump, exhaust etc and is smoother and stronger than that jap.......stuff. It also needs no computer as the injection and trans are both independent and hydraulicly controlled.
Go the windsor, a small block Chev is the hoss of choice in most swaps but this'n needs a front sump and dissy.
If you go the benz 6 pull one out of a 77 to 81 w123 280e, the later ones had a '3' series trans which will need a change in trans x member and driveshaft but the earlier ones ARE A BOLT IN with minor changes in wiring and the need to use the k - jectronic fuel pump package.
Do you really want to crossbreed Bosch and denso to achieve the same lack of torque? Ian.
