I've used rustoleum with generic hardener and thinned enough to spray, over the top of 2k primer AND on bare steel. It worked pretty darn well and was fairly cheap. Majic brand catalyst from Tractor Supply. Just remember this is now a 2K product so PPE is an absolute necessity. I can't tell you at this point what the mixing ratio was, but it also made for fairly easy touch ups with a brush. The more hardener you add, the glossier it will be. Plenty of info online. Surface prep definitely matters.

I did spray some parts with rustoleum and the added hardner that did not contain the isocyanate stuff and it seems to being doing fine. I did spray it over some "factory" primer.
I was hoping to do the same but did not know if the stuff I linked to from PPG is better than rutoleum since they are both alkyd enamels.
I would like to clean up what I have , factory paint, likely some bare spots but the ppg stuff says its a DTM paint . So I though I could get by with the PPG after cleaning and scuffing the frame . This is all working under the truck , as it is not a frame off resto, but also dont want to do a chitty job.
