Please notice I'm writing from position of my 21 old F250. So more like rat rod not hot rod.
As I posted in other thread I'm using cold galvanizing compound at undercarriage and end of panels for 10 years with so and so results. Thread is here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1595021-ten-year-of-using-cold-galvanizing-compound.html .
As I said results are mixed. Exhaust is where CGC shine and actually worked well at frame.
Past year I sprayed Cosmoline over CGC and was shock how hard such combination become. Try if you do not believe with that pencil scratch test. Spray CGC, leave it for a few days than spray Cosmoline over.
Now I would like to add 3. layer over Cosmoline for visible part of truck, like for bottom edge of panels. I did some test with "Rustoleum enamel paint" at one side in small area and another side with "Krylon H2O paint" (Krylon H2O is discontinued, It happen I have one can).
Result is that after one month or so Krylon hold much better at finger scratch test than Rustoleum. It look that actually solvent in rustolem help remove Cosmoline in finger test as some rust spots developed where I did scratch test at Rustoleum.
Now I want go Cosmoline - water based paint route. CGC in bottom may or may not be, Cosmoline is key. Keep in mind that all Germans cars come covered with it so painting over can be solution for many.
Confusing now is what is water based as Krylon (H2O) and Rustoleum (Aqua) aren't at shelves any more.
I looked into Rustoleum acrylic enamel but it look to me oil based https://www.rustoleum.com/~/media/D...Oleum/ROC-89-_Acrylic_Enamel_2X_Coverage.ashx . At another side Sherwin-williams talk about water based acrylic alkyds https://www.sherwin-williams.com/ho...nd-application/sw-article-pro-waterbasedacryl .
So where I can find water based spray can paint to use it over Cosmoline. It would be used only at exterior parts of panels prone to rust and some place at undercarriage so I can work at truck without getting Cosmoline at me.

Would like if some of pros here would check Cold galvanizing - Cosmoline combination. At last result of hardness. It seem to me that Cosmoline act like ceramic coating on modern paint. Cosmoline fill holes in Cold Galvanizing that is porous. And very strange is that they do not weaken each other.
