Pulled up numerous posts on this topic and just wanted to ask, won't 80 grit sandpaper leave deep grooves in the metal?

I was planning on using the stripper solvents, but finding they take too long. Should I use the sandpaper approach?

Thanks

Personally, be it an old vette or the aluminum hood on my Rover, I have never used anything finer than 80 to strip old paint or to clean stripped metal and I have never had 80 grit show up under one coat of epoxy or one coat of primer.

Same here. I stripped my 68 with 80grit on my DA and any scratches that were there filled with self-etching primer which only coats at about .05mils, so I wouldn't worry about any scratches from the 80grit.
