I am getting ready to paint my engine and want to use an epoxy primer to smooth out casting roughness then engine enamel.

Seems there are two different opinions -- those that say you need to keep the paint thin so as not to affect engine temp. (this inc. the paint manufacturer) and those that say that engine temp is not affected.

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of how hot their engine ran before and after using a primer?

Thanks for any help.

I would go paint it whatever color you would like. The smoothing of the block(less surface area in contact with the air) would have more effect on the cooling that what color you painted it.
Absolutely. I knew what color it was going to be before I started building the car.
