Can someone give me the basics on painting
base coat clear coat. Have done some painting in
the past, enamel and laquer. Just need to know the basic steps and materials I need. Want to
do the hood on my old truck for practice.
Appreciate any info on this subject.

OK LETS TEACH YOU HOW TO PAIN :)

FIRST OF YOUR EXISTING PAINT IS OK NOT PEALING OR ANYTHING YOU HAVE A FAIRLY SIMPLE JOB ON YOUR HADS, IFIF YOU HAVE ALL THE RIGHT EQUIPTMENT. FIRST YOU WILL NEED TO SCUFF THE OLD PAINT UP, THIS GIVES US WHAT WE CALL A TOOTH OR WHAT THE NEW PAINT CAN HOLD TO. THIS USUALLY CAN BE DONE WITH WETODRY 320 GRIT PAPER, I SAY USUALLY BECAUSE AGAIN IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR OLD FINISH. AS YOU WET SAND THE CAR AS I LIKE TO DO IT SAVES ON PAPER OVER DOING IT DRY. YOU MUST KILL ALL THE SINE ON THE OLD PAIT AND GET IT VERY SMOOTH. DURING SANDING OCCATIONALLY WIPE THE PAINT OFF LOOKING AT HOW YOU ARE PROGRESSING.

WHEN THE HHOD IS ALL SANDED AND WASHED AND THEN DRYED, LOOK IT OVER FOR ANT PITS DINGS OR DENTS BECAUSE NOW IS THE TIME TO REPAIR THEM.

IF YOU HAVE SOME MINOR SCRATCHES OR CHIPS GET WHATS CALLED ICEING, ITS A BIDY AND SCRATCH FILLER WITH A HARDENER OR CATALYST, MAYBE SPELLED WRONG :)

MIX A SMALL AMOUNT AND APPLY A VERY THIN COAT
WITH A RUBBER SQUEEGY LET DRY THE PROPER TIME THE REWET SAND TO A VERY SMOOTH FINISH. TRY USEING A RUBBER PAD NOT YOUR HAND FOR THIS PROCESS AS YOUR CAND CAN MAKE YOUR SPOT WAVY IF YOUR NOT EXPERIENCED AT THIS THE PAINT SHOP WHERE YOU BUY SUPPLIES CAN SELL YOU THIS STUFF.

OK NOW WITH ALL THAT DONE WERE READY FOR PRIMER, THIS I LIKE TO IS A METAL ETCHING EPOXY PRIMER IN CASE YOU HAVE ANY BARE METAL PLUSE IT HOLD REALLY
WELL. MIX AND SPAY WITH A HVLP GUN MAKING SURE YOU USE PROPER AIR FILTERING EQUIPT. AS THIS STUFF HAS SIANIDE IN IT, VERY BAD FOR YOUMAKING SURE YOU USE PROPER AIR FILTERING EQUIPT.. AS THIS STUFF HAS SIANIDE IN IT, VERY BAD FOR YOU

BEFOR YOU APPLY WIPE THE HOOD DOWN WITH PRE CLEANER, WAX AND GREASE REMOVER, THE USE A TACK RAG JUST BEFORE THE PRIMER. I LIKE TO SHOOT AT LEAST 2 MED COATS OF PRIMER. LET DRY.I HAVE TO READ THE DRY TIMES AND RECOAT TIME EA TIME I PAINT BECAUSE I CAN'T REMEMBER ALL THE PRODUCT DRY AND RESPRAY TIMES.

NOW SAND THE PRIMER DRY, I DON'T LIKE USEING WATER NOW AS IT CAN GET UNDER THINGS AND AS YOU PAINT IT CAN FLY OUT ON THE PAINT AND RUIN YOUR JOB.
SAND WITH ABOUT A 360 GRIT PAPER HERE JUST KNOCK OF THE TOP LAYER. WIPE WITH WAX AND GREASE REMOVER AGAIN AND TACK RAG OFF. NOW SPAY YOUR BASECOAT THIS IS CRITICAL, " 2 OR 3 LIGHT COATS ARE BEST NO WAY DO WE WANT A RUN HERE, AND YOU ARE ONLY LOOKING TO COVER EVERYTHING NOT PUT A SHINE ON 4 LIGHT COATS IS WAY BETTER THAN 2 HEAVY COATS.

WITH THE BASECOAT ON WAIT FOR THE PROPER DRY TIME MAYBE 15-30 MINS WHAT EVER THE PAINT SAYS.

TACK RAG THE PAINT OFF NOW YOUR READY FOR THE CLEAR COAT IF YOU HAVE DONE EVERYTHING RIGHT TO THIS POINT YOU CAN'T SCREW UP THE PAINT JOB NOW THE CLEAR IS THE EASY PAIT TO PUT ON AND THE MOST FORGIVING, EVEN IF YOU PUT A BIG RUN IN IT IT'S EASY TO FIX. PUT ON 3 WET COATS OF A GOOD QUALITY CLEAR PPG-DUPONT, WHATEVER PRODUCTS YOU START WITH BE SURE TO STAY WITH, DO NOT USE A PPG PRIMER AND A DUPONT PAINT NO NO NO. :) THATS ALL THERE IS TO IT UNLESS YOU WANT A SHOWCAR SHIME THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO ASK ME FOR MORE HELP.

GOOD LUCK BOMO

Prep the surface the same as you normally would.I would recommend using paint materials from the same company so you know they will be compatable.Spray your base coat to just cover, wait about 15min between coats.Wait at least a half hour before using clear to allow solvants to dry,but no more than 24hrs.Spray 3-4 coats of clear and let it dry approx 24hrs before sanding and buffing. You will need reducer, base coat, clear, and catalist, follow the mixing directions and you shouldn't have any problems. Be SURE to wear a RESPORATOR not just a dust mask when painting any catalized paint!!! The solvants aren't like the old paints, this stuff can and will really mess a person up. It's really not any harder to work with than what youv'e used in the past. ;)

ONE OTHER THING I WOULD LIKE TO ADD IS MOST OF THESE PRODUCT ARE TWO OR THREE PART---CATALYST
ACTIVATED MATERIALS,SO EXACT MIXING AND PREFECT TIMMING IS ESSENTIAL. MOST PAINT SUPPLIERS WILL GLADLY GIVE YOU THE INSTRUCTION FOR PAINTS. FILE THEM IN A NOTEBOOK--READ THEM--READ THEM-DO EXACTLY AS THE MANUFACTURE SAYS( EACH BRAND HAS DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONS) THEN KEEP THAT NOTEBOOK HANDY---LIKE THE SIGN OVER MY PAINT BOOTH SAYS
"SNAFU"!!
