Im a first time builder of a 700r4 and pretty mechanically inclined and have replaced all the clutches in the front half of the tranny but how do you take out the planetary gears to get to the clutches behind them? I cant figure it out and have looked everywhere on the web. I hear of a spring pack that might be difficult to remove and reinstall and a weird U shaped clip but don't know if I can/should do it. Im rebuilding it with a kit a reputable dealer here sold me and it had 1st 2nd and reverse that shifted good so I didn't know what I should do next. Any help will be better then my own inexperience.

you need a manual , ATSG manuals are very useful.
There is a snap ring that retains the output shaft in the case. This snap ring is located on top of the front planetary unit and the ring is around the output shaft. the ring is small and easily over looked by a rookie do it yourself person
