Hello. Been a ***** age since I was here. Things have a new look and I look forward to reconnecting. Hope everyone is doing well and keeping the rubber side down people.

I still have the C10 sporting the 67 283, she’s a good ole doll 35 years of ownership and 6 motors later. Just got myself a 65 Bonneville now as well. 389 4V date code is 1966 block is a YE and just getting to know her. What’s the story with the cam timing gear using nylon I read this can be a big mess if it starts to let go. Also does anyone have input as to what year they stopped using this on the 389? (400,455 not included) I read all the way up to 66 and other info stating 64 was the last year. Was thinking of pulling the cover but lots of work for nothing maybe? Any input greatly appreciated. T

Thanks Ernie. Just got the car, drove it from trailer straight into the shop so lots of unknowns. I won’t need to drop the pan if I decide pull the water pump and cover correct?

Also can a guy remove the fuel pump and have a peek in there with a bore scope maybe?

No need to pull oil pan. Not sure if you'll see it very good thru the fuel pump opening. But worth a try. Good luck Those are nice cars. Ernie.

Thanks again. I figure I’ll give that a look with the scope, it has a side view on the probe so if the pump shaft can make it all the way up to the eccentric then the probe should be in the ball park too. No heat in the shop right now so still waiting for Jack Frost to disappear, not going to tackle taking the timing cover off yet but pulling the fuel pump is doable. Call it planned procrastination,,,
