While looking for some info pertaining to a problem I have, I saw a post from Irelandschild stating that a pos grnd starter will run backwards if connected in a negative grnd fashion. Is this true?

yea, it runs the current backwards

NOT TRUE!! I have run many old cars/tractors on positive ground converted to negative ground. The only thing that has to be done is re-polarize the generator/voltage reg.

6 V starters

Up here in the cold rocky mountains we used to put 6 volt pos ground starters in our 12 volt fords so they would turn over at 40 below. just don't crank too long or you can fry it.

That's only true of permanent magnet electric motors. Old style starters had field windings, and since you would be reversing the polarity to both the field AND the armature, the motor will spin the same direction it always did. :thumbup:
