I am looking at adding a Ram Air I system to my 67 Firebird and was wondering what happens when it really starts pouring rain. The hood scoops will direct it right into the air cleaner right? I know small amounts of water won't hurt but what about a real downpour?

:nono: no way around it, either dont do it with hoodscoops and have it scoop the air by the lights, or grille section somehwere, or dont drive it in the rain. I guess you can buy those little hood scoop blocker things that you can pop in the scoop once it starts raining.

Getting wet??

In a down pour things get really wet!!! The ram air thing might be a little problem when it REALLY rains. Same problem washing the car and I bet the air cleaner will fill up in a hurry with the engine not running!! I wonder if a car cover might not be a good idea too!!

Ram Air

If you are really set on the Ram Air why not just go to Year 1 and put the factory Firebird Ram Air IV on your car? It's cable operated
so you can close the system in the rain. You have a nice car and it would be a good investment .

I made a ram air set up years ago for my 53 Chevy with a HiPo 327. I used the two fresh air inlets in the front bulkhead next to the radiator, fabbed and installed two inlets on the air cleaner, made two more adapters that fit over the first two and connected them to the inlets with good dryer vent hose. I added two u - shaped brackets to the fender wells so that I could unplug the hoses at the air cleaner and set them in the u - brackets when it rained too hard. I learned real quick just how much rain was too much, like when the engine starts to run like $*#T..

Excess worry mates.I drove a car with a fully open scoop for a while and the engine could'nt care less for rain.It would simply swallow it as if nothing was there.The volume of air being sucked is simply way bigger then water to cause something like hydrolock.In fact I read it helps decarbonize the chambers!

yeah i dont run one, but unless you get a big amount of water runnin in at once the motor dont care... infact one of the old tricks to clean out your motor was to pour water down the carb with the throttle cracked open a bit..
