I have a 86 porsche with original paint. The car has been mostly garaged its whole life. I have some really fine scratche along the sides of of the car that appear to be deep in the clear coat or under it. I have tried 3M super fine polish compound and the car looks really shinny until you loook close at certain angles and then you see lots of fine scratches. I can't feel them on the surface (but that could be just the wax).

Anyway, is there such a thing as cracks in the base coat? Any thoughts on how I can fix?

If they're deep you'll probably not get them out without goin throug.
But if they are on the surface then sanding them out then polishing
would work. Meguiars has paper up to 3000 grit.
I wouldn't go any coarser than 2000. It's risky either way.
Depends on how deep you need to go. :pimp:
