Before you started changing things how did it run?

Put the old carb back on and try it. See if things
Change if it doesn't change anything at least you have eliminated the carb. Something you have done is causing your problems. Are you sure you installed the timing set correctly? I would also go back and do a reinstall of the distributor pull it find tdc and reinstall and make sure your plug wires are installed correctly. Do 1 at time so you will know what corrected the problem. If none of these fixes your problem, I would guess you have a vacuum leak at the manifold some where.

I see you changed distributor and wires do you have the distributor and wires from before? Try your old dizzy. So.ething you changed is causing your issues.

My guess is bad vac leak or carb.

As Ericnova has said that rotor could point in any direction long as you make position #1.

Tynan, you found top dead center withe tdc tool. Did you mark that on your balancer and then set timeing off that mark? Even without a time light you should be able to adjust your distributor close enough to get the engine to run decently. I still believe your problem is carberation.

If I go any lower than 800 RPMs in then the RPMs will drop below 500 and drive.

I had another guy tell me that 800 to 900 RPMs was normal at idle for a stock 305 small block Chevy.

Who ever told you that is wrong.
