I have a 67 musatng with a 200 inline 6, I am putting in a beefy 302 and i cant guess how muh HP it will have. I know my rear end is small but i dont know how to find out what size it is, because i have suspisions that the guy i got it from may have put a new one in. I am new to the restoration stuff so anything you can give me will help.

One of the oldest hot rodding questions.............

Put the motor in and drive it. If it lasts, it lasts. Chances are you will want to change the gears eventually, so worry about it then.

You probably have a Ford 7.5" -- there are some axle ID charts on the web but I couldn't find one handy just now.

Pretty good chance it will last with normal street driving. Go looking for the charts, or maybe another member might have the reference handy?

For long term durability a Ford 9" or 8.8" would be better and they aren't that hard to find, but I wouldn't make it my top priority, get it going with what you have and upgrade later.

If you're going to stand on it any at all I'd swap the rear end for a 9 inch. Even the 8 inch rear end that came with a 289 2 bbl never held up to a hopped up 289 or 302 with tires that were good tires 20-30 years ago. Todays high performance tires grip better and that will just work the rear end harder.

Does it open to the front or back? In my opinion the 9"is overkill.Besides the 8" is not a weak diffy.Wrong reputation.I road raced a 302 Maverick on tracks like Bridgehampton,Lime Rock and Pocono with no problem.They are cheaper and lighter.
