i've got a crank out of a 1 piece rear main 305 block & the rear main seal has ate two grooves in the rear of the crank where the seal rides. i was wondering how this is fixed? do they make a sleeve for it like they do balancers? do i have it welded & reground? do i trash it? it's a cast crank, but i still hate to just trash it.

u should be able to buy a redi-sleeve kit for it like u would for a harmonic balancer.. ive installed several of them in my time...

The easiest option is a rear seal with an offset lip to make contact with the unworn part of the journal.

There's no way that I know of to repair the crank aside from welding and it would be about the same cost to buy a new crankshaft.

I would second the redi-sleeve suggestion. They are stainless steel and very thin, they work great. I have used them on sevral applications, the last one was on an MG-TD crank. They are made for all sorts of applications where ther is excess wear on a seal area. They are made for harmonic balancer noses that get too worn from the seal as well.

Yes, they do make a speedi-sleeve for that application (assuming it's a 1989 305).

NAPA (C/R) Part Number 99364 is what you want.
Be prepared to grab your ankles, though ... they ain't cheap. :mwink:
Looks like $42.00 US, which is less than I thought.

the sleeve is what i'm wanting to use, but i can't find one for a late model chevy 350-305. anyone have a part number or know where i can get one? auto zone says they don't make them for a late 305-350. i might have to get a offset rear seal. do you have a part number for it? thanks guy's

Take the rear main housing to a machine shop and have them bore the seal area an 1/8 inch deeper, this moves the seal to a good area on the crank. I have done this myself to 2 350's and it works great!

I made a jig from a 6" x 6" plate of CRS, tapped 4 holes in the plate, mounted the rear seal housing, indicated the center, and bored it with a Bridgeport. Super easy and works great!

do you have a part number on the offset seal? the sleeve is $41.00 & then i would still need a rear seal. thats to expensive.
