My distributor was leaking oil I removed the distributor from my Chevy 350 and replaced the gasket I put it back in the same place I took it out lined it up with the #1 plug and damper at tdc, it wont start it keeps popping out of the carb, I though it might be a tooth off so I had a friend crank the engine to get it at tdc , he left the key on , I didn,t know he left it on and started to pull the distributor ---there was a spark and some black smoke I guess I must of hit something or did the modular burn out? any way It wont start now!! :: just keeps popping threw the carb, could it be 180 degrees out ? It has a flame thrower distributor hei how do you check the modular?

Pull the #1 spark plug,
put finger over hole
bump engine until it starts to blow your finger off hole
bring timing mark up by hand
Check rotor position.

Sounds like you are 180 degrees out. IF it is poping you may not have hurt the distributor as it takes spark to backfire

Thanks that is what i was thinking Saturday I will put my finger in the #1 spark pluk cylinder to see.

that is what the problem was I was 180 degrees out
