I'm doing some temporary work on my runningboards ... there's some minor surface rust that I'm gonna remove, going down to bare metal, and then I'm gonna apply gray primer/sealer to those spots. I've never done this before.

My question is: Do I need to paint over the primer to avoid any further rusting?

NOTE: I'm only sanding and priming in various spots and this is just to stop further rusting until next Spring when I'll be removing the runningboards and having them chromed.
