Replacing a rear main seal in a SBC with engine in?

I have a 383 stroker that developed a leak in the timing chain cover seal, so I'm after that right now. While the oil pan is down I am considering changing the rear main. This is a 1970 350, two piece seal. My 1965-72 Chilton's manual describes the technique. What do you think?
