ok, another new painters question
first time painting. I just painted a bare metal fender with transtar 2k self etching primer (part # 6114) using a downdraft hvlp gun with the regulator set at 40 where the hose connects to the gun. It turned out good as far as i can tell. The problem , question is that it has a rough texture to it. Not thick type orange peel, more like a sandpaper feel to it. Do i need more paint coming through the gun or is it supposed to be this way? Can i lightly sand this stuff smooth?
Any tips would be very appreciated

Was it hot when you sprayed? I've had the same problem with primer, too hot, the primer dried too fast. Sand it smooth, should be no problem. Try wetsanding with some 220. Dan

Air pressure too high.
Should be just enough to get atomization for spraying primers.
Gun distance from panel???
Perhaps a little too far away. Try spraying at 3"-4" off the panel. These methods will save on material useage and dry spots. with low pressure and spraying close, you get maximum material transfer and little or no overspray.
Give it a try!
