I have a 72 nova that has a decent amount of rust on the wheel wells. Most of it is on the edge of the wheel well. Alot of the rust on the rest of the car I was going to replace with fiberglass parts. On the 1/4 panals though I was looking at having someone weld in new sheet metal. I was wondering if there is a guidline or a way to tell if the sheetmetal replacement is a option. I have seen alot of magazines and web pages that sell sheet metal and there is a 2 door and a oe my nova is a 2 door can I just get that one? Its alot cheaper thats why I ask. Is there a way or place to look for a entire replacement rear half of the car? Sorry for the beginner ?'s.

How far to go on rust repair is entirely up to you, What's the car worth to you, are you keeping it, get some estimates on repair work. I hate rust, I wouldn't leave it unrepaired, myself. How high up onto the wheelwells are you rusted. Is it rusted all the way through the metal? If your car is a 2 door, the panels should fit. You might ask the supplier this also. Good luck. Dan

Yea the car has a lot of sentimental value thats the only reason i have it. on the outside it is only rusted through on the edge on underside it is rusty but i was hoping to be able to replace the 1/4's and then sand or grind the rest on the inside? I dont know if that will illiminate the rust or if it will just come back? I have a friend who thinks he can weld the 1/4 panals for me, he has alot of welding experience but he has never done car sheet metal? Is it harder to weld sheet metal then frames or whatever he has done before?

The hardest part about welding in repair panels is warpage. You cannot use too much heat or weld on the same spot for too long. A mig or tig welder is reccomended.

The panels for a Nova should be redally available.

Another consideration to where you weld in panels is how much experience you have at doing body work. A half panel, cuts the quarter horizontally, will require a lot more body work after it is welded in. Also the chance for warping the panel is greater. If you put in a full 1/4 you need to remove back glass, 1/4 glass, Aline trunk and door panels etc. You will spend a lot more time installing the 1/4 but will have a lot less body work. Talk to a body man in your area and ask him to show you where you can section a full 1/4 panel, this will allow you to leave in the glass and still minimize the body work. Ask around as to finding some good quality panels.I used some Goodmark panels on a 71 chevelle and they were junk!

If you have a chance to check out a large body shop, do it. Most large shops in my area, usually have atleast one car that is having a quarter panel replaced at any time. Ask if you can see how they are doing it. There is alot involved in the process of puting a whole quarter on, but less actual body straightening required. There is actually, in my experience, less chance for warping the panel that way. I would also check out any books on body repair that you can find.

Replacing a quarter panel is not a project for the weak at heart. It is also not a project that you want to rush at. It is however quite doable if you have access to a good welder(person and machine) and take your time to make sure everything is in the right place before it is welded.
