I have heard that you can tell what gear sets are in the trans by counting the number of grooves. Where are these grooves? Are they the grooves on the input shaft spline.

On the pilot shaft. 4ring- 3 ring- 2 ring, all 4the gears are the same. The 4 ring I have has a 1st gear is soooooo low you can use it for only about 10 ft!

Found in the knowledge base:
http://www.dandltransmission.com/saginaw.html

scroll down to the bottom of the page and there is a list of saginaw trans ratios and groove counts.
I'd call it 3 grooves and a wide ratio trans.

powerrodsmike probably got that out of the Knowledge Base from one of my many contributions over the years I've been on here, I used to have all that stuff at the top of the Trans - Rear Forum in a couple of sticky threads.

All of that information was a lot to post into a couple threads, and eventually was added to the KB.

I PM'ed a link to a picture on the internet confirming the three groove input shaft to razdude, I just didn't take the time to confirm the gear ratios for him.
