currently right now im running the following sbc:
350 SBC approx 8.5:1 with stock cast iron 76cc heads 1.94 valves and god knows what runners. Edelbrock performer intake, com cams magnum cam (.480 lift) and a 670 street avenger. 3.73 rear gears and a detroit.. tci super street fighter turbo 350 all in a 79 z28. this is how i bought the car.
In recent history lets just say my right foot became stupid and long story short the studs on my stock heads are now pulling out (pressed in fit). So im looking to upgrade my heads... while going around jegs i found this little gem ( Dart 01311132 Dart SHP Top End Kits for SB-Chevy ) DART SHP top end kit... 200 cc runners, 2.02 intake and 200 cc runners with matched intake and a 64cc chamber.. this is not only a daily driver but also weekend warrior.. would this be a good kit to go to?? and what kind of gains would i be looking at going from stock iron heads and a 8.5:1 to approx 9.5:1 and aftermarket aluminum heads with matched intake???

To be honest with the combo you have and considering the weight of the car 200cc runners are on the big side for a street bound 350. In fact, a great head for your combo would be the GM Vortec Bowtie small port head. This head has 185cc runners and smaller chambers that will kick your compression ratio up to where it needs to be. You'll also need a Vortec intake.
Just by adding those heads and getting it tuned correctly you'll kick the performance of your engine right square in the behind and you'll love it.

I would look into a set of the RHS pro torker heads or the RHS pro action heads, EQ, Profiler, even the Edelbrock E-tech or performer RPM heads are decent. all of these heads have in the area of 170-185cc intake runners which is right about where you want to be and all of these heads are flowing around 230-240CFM @ ,480-.500" your max lift.

all nice heads... but for 1200 i can get the shp heads, shp matched intake, all new gaskets and hardware.... compared to just the heads for 1200...are the dart heads that bad?

79z28dude, Try the link again I click on it today at 3:03 pm and it worked. If you can't get it that way, copy it and paste it in your browser. This is a kit with everything you need. The kit includes assembled 64cc Vortec heads, head gaskets, GM head bolts, GM stamped steel rocker arms, intake manifold, intake gaskets, 12 point intake bolts and additional required components as stated.
This kit features our upgraded Vortec heads which have been modified to accept our high performance Z28 valve springs with lightweight LT4 retainers. This produces a high reving cylinder head that can handle up to 0.525" lift hydraulic camshafts. An Edelbrock Vortec Performer intake manifold is matched with this kit for optimum performance. $1109.00

ok i got the link to work... thats a good deal.... now if i may ask... the 200cc is too much but the 180cc SHP heads should work fine with my set up..... and if i go to the vortec style than ill not only still have iron heads but will also need to buy center bolt valve covers....
my other thought is if i upgrade to the 1.6 rockers i should gain roughly 8% on lift.... or i decide to add spray to the car.... should i leave room for expansion rather than limiting myself on head choice??? my overall goal approx 400-425 NA hp and keep it as streetable as possible

SBC questions

How much of a shot are you talking about? If you are thinking of upgrades later on and want aluminum heads by all means get the Dart SHP's. The only thing that bothers me is the piston volume. If this engine has not been rebuilt it probably has 20cc dished pistons. Even with the 64cc heads that would put your compression at 9.419 using a .015 steel shim head gaskets. I would want around 10.1 with aluminum heads. If both 180cc & 200cc kits are the same price I would get the 200cc heads and plan on rebuilding a 383 cid as money comes available. Just a thought.

dont build a castle on a foundation of sand. meaning dont put a bunch of money into the top end of the motor if the bottom end is weak. and as cdminter59 stated, if they are even close to the same price then i would go after the 200cc heads and plan on building a 383 in the near future.

about the spray: this is just my opinion but the only place nitrious has any use is on the drag strip. what on the street are you gonna hit the spray every time you get on the car, not likely.

062 HEADS AND A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS INTAKE CROSS WIND INTAKE

i have had the head and intake on for about 2 weeks now....first off i am VERY pleased with the crosswind intake never going to any other brand from now on....it is alittle slugish when the engine is cold, but very compareable to the other performer intake i had on it... with the new top end i went from a 13.4 1/4 time to a 12.8 with a simple increase in compression, better flowing heads and much better intake.....when ever you guys said go to the vortec head you were not kidding... the only work i did to the heads and intake was clean up the runners and smooth them out a touch, and port match them....

with the 670 street avenger carb and a pretty much open exhaust im still getting good milage out of it (as long as i drive normal and dont get into it)

and on a side note if anyone goes to plumb these intake dont spend a stupid amount on fittings and hoses from jegs or summit... GO TO LOWES....i spent $10 plumbing the 4 corner cooling... both heads are within 10 degrees of each other according to my gauges

L31 Vortec heads, high-rise, dual-plane intake and long tube headers. It's a magical combination that I have run on the Dyno-Sim many times. Will make a solid 400 hp with the correct cam and carburetor and 9.50:1 - 9.80:1 SCR.
