Got a question guys. I am trying to get my hood painted, and am having a little difficulty. I am using a 8# S-10 hood and have got all the body work and cowl finished. After spraying the Martin Seniour epoxy sealer coat, it seems there is a little bit of reaction where the oem primer is exposed around the edge of the body work. It seems to pull the primer loose or at least react with it and leaves a flawed surface. I have used this Epoxy Sealer over cheap rattle can surfacer primer with no problems in the past. I am wondering what the deal is with the oe stuff. Is it possible it is a laquer primer or something. Of course even the build primer i use is laquer base and does not do this. Anyway I am rambling. Any insight would be helpful. I am not to interested in stripping the small affected areas, but if need be......

Should a thin coat of build primer between the sealer and the oe primer cure the issue?

did you let the sealer COMPLETELY flash before you sprayed the primer? The sealer I use has looked and 'felt' like it flashed during cold months before, only to start gassing again when the temperature got above 70 in the shop, then it tore up my primer above it.

Just a thought.

I guess I was unclear. I am spraying the sealer over the body work and filler primer. There are areas, due to block sanding, where I went through the existing paint into the oem primer/sealer. The pulling seams to only be right at the edge of the primer line. It seems at though the sealer is trying to pull the primer off, and where it is too thin it succeeds. I went ahead and sanded the bad areas back down and used a self etching primer and it did okay. I will shoot the sealer over that, and I think it will be okay.

I am just wondering what was causing it.

my only thought on it would be; was it absolutely freakin clean? only thing I can come up with..... i'm sure it was, but you know.....

Yeah, it was clean......Unless there were contaminates imbedded in the original primer, but it doesnt seem the original paint would have worked.

Turbo, while not familiar with the Martin-Senour I will tell you from experience with epoxy primer that it is to be used over bare metal only not used as a sealer. The factory used a waterbourne primer around the time your truck was built making using epoxy primer incompatable. Using the self etching is the best way to go but use a two stage urathane primer in stead of the lacquer primer. Alot of todays single stage and two stage paints are not compatable with lacquer primer and does not prevent bleedthrough of some body fillers. Also do not use epoxy primer over body filler due to the fact the epoxy primer will lift the filler right off the body Use body filler over selfetching and epoxy primer and then spray the urathane primer and block sand. Thias should prevent any further problems you may encounter.

Hey goat, those are some interesting ideas. I have already used the epoxy over bondo and about everything else I have not had any problems to date. I have top coated everything but the hood and tailgate with no visible issues so far. The Martin Seniour Epoxy can be used as a wet on wet sealer with the addition of their CS-30 reducer.

I have heard that the laquer primer is not the best, but I have had good luck with it thus far also. I think next time I will use a catalyzed primer, but I did not know when I bought everthing. It was all recommended to work together by the Paint guy at NAPA. I did not shoot the urethane top coat on the laquer primer. I have been using the epoxy as a sealer thus far over the laquer primer and it has been fine.

I am keeping my fingers crossed. I hope to be done at the end of summer. I still have a few big ticket items to buy, and alot of finish work to do. Finish wiring, brakes, fuel system, and get the trans and engine in. Oh ya the the thrid member. I have almost all the parts, but there is just alot of work left.
