im looking for your opions. im replacing a gm 12 bolt open carrier with a limited-slip.(81 chevy). i called and emailed Richmond gears and they gave a confusioning answer to what the check distance should be for a set of 4.56 gears. looking at the pics, do you think more pinion shim? less pinion shim? or close enough? back lash is at 8 thousands. pinion bearings are pre loaded with 15 in lbs. lookin g for answers from the people that can do this all the time. this is my first

If you've only got shims in increment of .005", try taking another .005" out.
It may get better yet or it may be too far.

What you have now is better than the first shots, and may be as good as it will get with those shim increments.
If smaller shim increments were on hand, I'd go .003" less this time actually.
Pattern has good location on the tooth, I'm just looking for the pattern to 'ovalize' and the edges feather out less distinct edges on the drive side.....similarly to the coast side, which is pretty decent..

Yeah, looks pretty good.
I still think the ideal would be to add .002" back in and check it then, but you don't have the shim selection thinner so it is what it is.

I'd run that the way you have it.
