I know this is a real shot in the dark, but if you read my post in the lounge about needing to vent then you will understand why I have come back to you guys and gals for an answer.

I have a 68 Beetle that I am restoring.

I installed a used shifter from my 69 Beetle. The shifter IS installed properly. I replaced the shift-rod bushing, ensured the shift-rod coupling was in good repair, and found all of the gears before tightening the shifter down.

Now I am able to use all of the gears 1-4 and R.

Here's the problem(s).... First gear is a little tough to find and the reverse lock-out is not working at all(push down for reverse), so I tend to grind a little bit of reverse on the way to second gear. I intend to install a better quality shifter in time, but my main concern at this point is this...
Do you think the problem is in my shifter or in my tranny?

Any help here would be really appreciated!!!

there has to be a bug site on line some place....look for help there?? I don't know anybody that even drives a bug anymore...so nobody to even ask.

Shifter/trans prob

I may be able to help you out, or direct you to a couple of beetle fans actually. My father-in-law, Bill, and the owner of Mark's Auto, Mark, are restoring everything VW. I am sure they will be able to throw a little advice your way the number is 520-458-0600. Just to save face, I am not advertising ANYTHING, but these guys are bug freaks and I know they can help ya.

Thanks for the lead jillklbltl. I will have to ask them.

tm454--Unfortunately I have been to the Bug web-sites and they just plain stink!!! I have yet to find one that has anything worth calling decent tech help...Yes, I have tried, but have not had any luck.

Sorry to bug you guys with some of these questions... No pun intended :)

I know I am new here and all, but the way I see it is: "It never hurts to ask!" I am not a tech, heck not even a mechanic, but it has been my experience that there is always someone, who knows someone, who can help or die trying.

As a matter of fact if for some reason you don't want to give my father-in-law a call, I'll ask them for ya. Now mind you I am a girl and the message may get a little skewed along the way.:embarrass just jokin!

Might try adjusting the clutch cable. If the clutch is not completely disengaging when you push the pedal to the floor, it will be hard to get it into gear, & it will grind into reverse.

I checked the clutch cable and it is within tolerance. I think I found that the shifter is indeed worn out. Thanks for the replies everyone, I really appreciate it!
