Hey guys - Does anyone know how much a shock should be pre-loaded, as far as a percentage of travel? In other words, how much should the shock be compressed when the suspension is at rest? I'm ready to weld the lower shock mounts to the axle housing, and I need to figure out the correct angle. Any help would be appreciated.
Welcome. Being new to the site, you need to be sure to read the "Read Me' posts at the beginning of each forum. The ones here for example recommend that you just post a general introduction here and post tech questions in the appropriate tech forum. This will give you the best chance for a good answer.
Preload the shocks only a couple of inches. You want as much compression travel as possible, don't need it on the top side.
Mount them as far outboard as possible and as vertical as possible so they have the max travel.
Thanks Willys - but what happens when the suspension travels past the point of the shock's max extension? Won't that kill the shock when the rod bottoms out? Does that question even make sense?
It isn't real good for the shock but luckily it is a rare occurrence. Also, the load on the shock in that extreme is only the unsprung weight of the A-arms and wheel whereas a bottom out on the other end is the whole front end of the car.
