It is likely the truck engine, so you can expect that everything about it is geared for low-mid rpm torque pulling on low octane leaded fuel.
A little more cam and good exhaust wakes them up. Don't forget the ignition curve and electronic ignition on the 75-76 FE. After that, if you need more, then induction upgrades are in order.
