My speedo needle flutters and i was wondering what causes it and what i can do about it? Is it a bad cable or worn out speedo? Does the cable need lubricant? This speedo is in a 81 camaro turbo 350 and no cruise, if any of this helps? All answers are welcome.
thanks,

This can usually be corrected with a little grease on the cable. Slide the cable out of the caseing grease and reinstall. Also check for sharp bends, and be sure ends are tight. Bud

I agree with Hot57, in that your cable needs a little lubrication, but I don't know if I'd use a generic grease. After a while, the grease will harden and you'll have a hard time getting it out of the speedo-cable housing. Cold climate will also aggravate the problem. I think I would use a light oil with a little graphite mixed in. There may already be a ready-mix lube available just for this application. Remove your speedo housing from the speedometer and the trans, pull the cable out and flush the housing before you put new lube in. I know it sounds like a lot of trouble, but you'll only have to do it once. Make sure your cable is absolutely clean before you put it back into the housing. Good luck!

The best thing I have found for speedo cables is moly powder, I mix it with alchohol and pour or inject it through the cable. We use it at work a lot and it is by far the best. The moly doesn't get thick in the cold and the alchohol cleans the cable guide at the same time. We buy the powder in quart cans but I have found a product that contains the same ingrediants, it is called "speedo ease", made by the same company that makes "door ease". Comes in a little red tube for easy dispensing, grease or graphite doesn't compare. Every cable I own is lubricated with it, even works great on motorcycle chains and won't sling off once the alchohol evaporates. Try it, you will never go back. Messy as hell if you spill the powder mind you.
