starter or flexplate

I have a 1978 454 and a turbo 400 out a 1988-89 truck that Im trying to pair up and It appears either the flexplate is to big? because the starter cannot fit close enough for the bolt pattern to line up. Please shed some light

Ayuh,.... It's a Chevy....

If the starter's bolt pattern is Straight Across,... You need a 12" flywheel....
If it's the Staggered Patterned starter,... You need the 14" flywheel...
