I have an old Volvo wagon that I have been working on for a while. Hopefully it will turn into a little rod bender.....

I was re-wiring it with an EZ wiring kit yesterday. I worked on just the engine compartment and ran everything as the book told me too. I just bought a 94 amp 12Si alt, new battery, fresh terminals, etc. I wired everything up and thought that I would try to start it to see if it would even turn over. All ignition wiring correct. From the battery, 4 ga to starter, and grounded to body. I pulled all the wires off the alternator just to run it off the battery to see if it would turn and nothing. With a test light checked all ignition wires, they are all golden, the ignition coil.....it's fine. I even have power all the way down to the starter but the starter won't click or turn over. I haven't had amy problems with the starter........arghhhhhh

Forgot to mention starter solenoid wire in place. Whenever I try to turn it over it flashes accordingly. I know thats wired correctly. Tried rocking the car back and forth, nothing........

To test, Jump the "S" wire over to the BATT wire on the solenoid..If it cranks the fault is in the wiring, not the solenoid..If not the solenoid is at fault.

Put your DVOM set to DCV scale , V X 50 or autorange, on the "S" wire and have someone hit the key..It should jump from 000, to 12 volts and back when you release the key.

If not check the Neutral Safety Switch , (You DID hook it up, Right? ) do the same test there..Both sides should have 12 volts in neutral..If not the switch is bad..if so backtrack it to the Ignition switch. It could be bad or mis~Wired.

I did try to jump the solenoid and nothing happened. I just have a hard time thinking that the starter is out. I have been running this thing for the past month without and starter problems........Maybe I just don't want to have to get under there to yank it out and replace it.

I ran grounds from the battery to the body and to the block. Should I run anymore for the time being?

**IF** you jumped the **"S"** terminal to the **Batt terminal**, and it did not energize and crank..**AND** the Ground is proper, AND there IS 12 volts at the Solenoid **BATT terminal**..The solenoid is bad...no other Electrical options exist..

YOUR GROUNDS should be set up like this to be proper:

Run a properly gauged Ground cable from the battery to any handy bolt at or near the starter, From that same bolt get a Battery cable at the parts store, that has two 3/8 ring terminals on each end and attach it there and to the Frame.

Next get some 10 gauge wire and ring terminals and run that from your bolt on the block to the Firewall, and another to the Alternator bracket or mount bolt.

Next get some Wire Braid, (Radio Shack) and install braid from the radiator support to the frame, Fenderwells to frame , hood to firewall, Doors to door posts, gas flap to body, tailgate / Trunk to body.

At each point the wire is grounded, Burnish ALL the paint and grease off to bare metal. Use a proper star-washer and lock. Use sheetmetal or Tech screws where no screws are available.

It sounds like a lot of work, but after you assemble all the parts, it's only a few hours to do..and you'll end up with a system that will work reliably for many years to come..and can eliminate that from your troubleshooting list.

BTW :: The "S" terminal is the closest one to the block...NOT the fenderwall..

THANKS for the help

I looked at all of the wiring and decided that it was right on so I decided to pull the starter. In the process of pulling the starter I noticed another terminal on the bottom side that I was not able to see from the top. I put the wire on that terminal and the starter turned over.

I feel like a Dumb-A. But I appreciate all of your helpful suggestions.

Now your are the "starter motor wiring specialist". That is if you learned from this experience. LOL

I hope any problems you do get are little ones like this was.
