I recently bolted up a 5 speed 1990 F150 trans to a 1965 289 engine and the starter will not engage the flywheel. It just spins. I find out the 1990 F150 engine had a 164 tooth flywheel and the 1965 289 engine could of had a 157 tooth flywheel . Could this be the problem? If so is there a starter available that could make it work? Or is there a modification that I could do that would make it work?

You need to verify that the tooth count is the problem first
