starter shim check

1155 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  docvette
ive got a custom built starter for a smallblock chevy. the builder said the housing was made to fit the block with no need to shim. thats alright but id like to make sure before i destroy a balanced flywheel. no auto parts stores sell starters with shims anymore so i cant get the tiny rod used to check the shaft to flywheel teeth clearance. does anyone know where i can get one or is there anything equivelant? or does anyone know the exact thousanths of the rod used to gauge the starter? please help.

Doc here, :pimp:

JIMFULCO is quite correct, any 1/8 inch round stock will work as a gear clearance checker.
