I think you will have a very interesting project. The steering box and column are one piece-from box to steering wheel-go to your favorite junk yard and look under hoods and see whats involved in column swap-ford trucks changed to two piece in 65-good luck
A popular combo for 50s F100s is a Chevy column mated to a Toyota Land Cruiser power steering box. The Toyota box is virtually the same size and shape as the original Ford box and mounts easily w/ a home made bracket. See my Project Journal to see how I did it on my '53 Chevy PU.
