Hey, guys. There are some smoking deals on the GM universal and 290Hp engines right now. I want to buy one to take advatage of the deals but was wondering if waiting say a year in storage is going to damage the engine. Are there any tips to preserve and engine in storage or should I just pass on the deals? Thanks, SS.

I can't can't help much with your question, sorry. But where are you getting the smoking deals from? I'm looking at possibly getting one of those engines as well. And if the price is right I'll get one now.

It probably wouldnt hurt anything to store one of these motors,although any breakin lube would likely run off the camshaft/lifters,so cam lobe wear might be an issue,although it wouldnt be too hard to pull the cam and re-lube it.If I was storing a motor I would pour some 2 stroke oil down the intake and put some in the spark plug holes also.Pre lubing would be a very good idea when you are ready to start it up.Turning the motor over a little bit every now & then would also be a good idea.

I actually completed my motor a year prior to installing it in my Cobra. What I did was build a engine stand and ran the engine according to break-in. After that I would run it once maybe twice a month just to keep things moving. I could tinker with it and do oil changes easily. I also run Evans waterless coolant and had no problems with corrosion. Just an idea.

For NON running storage=
Internal cylinder oiling,
and duct tape all free-air entrances to the crankcase and intake to prevent constant exchange of humid air.
Storage in climate controlled room is most important.
Monthly manual turnover to change the ring and spring positions.

Future cam break-in might be of concern. Future running will indicate valve spring softening and lifter collapse.

I would question how long they sit before the consumer gets them. I bet they sit on their shelves at least a year so 1 year vs 2 years that much different?

Ductape may be cheaper, but that kit seems like a good solution to what your looking to do. You may even want to run a little sealer or a thicker moly lube around the ports to seal it up better.

It just adds a hundred dollar core charge when you add it to your shopping cart.
The SDPC engine has a shipping charge of $255, which brings the total to $1694.

I have a SBC short block currently in storage, all I did was sprayed it down with WD-40 in all areas with a good soaking while I spun the crank, there is breakin lube on the bearings, then I bagged her on the stand.
