I just bought one of those liteweight aluminum mini-type starters from Summit Racing. Ive never used/installed one b4. The instruction sheet says I have to use a wire gauge to measure the...('lash??...backlash??'...WTF??...) between the starter pinion and the flywheel. I see it on the diagram, but how do I do this??...The engine is a '67 Chevy 396 BB, with a '71 Super T-10 4-speed in a '71 Firebird................thanx guys!!

Once you have the starter installed, be sure to use the Chevy knurled bolts. Take a big screwdriver and pry the bendix out into the teeth of the flywheel. Measure where 1 tooth of the bendix is centered between 2 teeth of the flywheel. Try .030 to start with.
