I've got a 92 S-10 Blazer with 200k miles on it. the 4.3 runs great, but the tranny is slipping between 2nd and 3rd. I just picked up a tranny for $30 with 80k miles on it. the guy claims it works well, but I guess I'll find out. Anyway, there is another guy in town who has a floor shift tcase with 91k miles on it. My blazer has the push button 4x4 and after about 2 minutes of it being in 4wd, something disengages and neither the front nor rear wheels spin until I take it out of 4x4 and put it back in. Then its fine for another couple minutes. The push button 4x4 system has 2 actuators. One one the Tcase and one under the battery tray. I assume one of those is bad, or there is a vacuum leak somewhere.

Long story short, Is the conversion process from a push button tcase to a floor shift tcase difficult?

I figure If I can get the stick style installed then there's less crap that can go wrong with vacuum and other electrical stuff. Thanks!

If your changing the trans anyway. I'd have to say the hardest thing for the conversion will be cutting the hole in the floor for the shifter. It wouldn't hurt to get the little tabs/w clips off of the floor board of the donor vehicle for the shifter bezel in case they are different.

Might want to make sure that the outputs are the same. You might need different length drive shafts and possible different U Joints on one end then the other end, unless its the exact same model transfer just manual shift.

With the push button, the hubs or the front differential (im not sure which) are engaged by an actuator when the 4x4 button is pushed. What will need to be done for the hubs when I use a stick tcase? Should I just use the button to engage to hubs and then use the stick to engage the tcase?

You should be able to purchase manual locking hubs also, not very expensive depending on the model of vehicle.

the vacuum switch will still be on the earlier t-case in the same place as the t-case you already have in it. i would just check to make sure that while the trans and t-case are out of the truck that you check the vacuum lines out and make sure theyre not leaking. thats what keeps the front hubs locked in. gl on your venture. :thumbup:

Thanks! I've seen some Warn hubs for 50 bucks, and the donor may already have the manual hubs on it since it had the stick tcase. I'll check it out. thanks again

I've never seen lockouts on an s10 at least not one with stock running gear. They do not make them for s10's. The actuator in the front only locks/unlocks the inner axle on the rh side.

The S-series front axle is locked by the vacuum actuator by the baterry tray.
It can be replaced by a cable that allows you to shift that axle lock with a cable and T-handle, there were never lockable hubs on that series vehicle in stock form, and I have never seen anything aftermarket.

You might also get away with fabricating a shifter handle for your stock transfer case, after you remove the problem-prone shift motor, all that does is turn a gear and physically shift the transfer case for you, you might be able to make something that fits over the shift shaft replacing the motor and housing with something that can be attached to a rod for a stick or lever type shifter.
