You'll get a variety of opinions on those so I suppose I'll start with mine. I would say a well built, COOLED th-350 could withstand 450 on a regular basis.
Thanks, I was wondering becuase I hope to buy probably a 383 crate (425hp 460tq) for my first project. I'm assuming the TH-400 can handle more power, besides the different gear ratios and such.
Go with a TH350, it eats less power than a Th400 and built properly will have no problem taking that kind of power. I know a few guys whose TH350s take 500+ horsepower regularly.
If thats your projected power output Id also say go with the th-350 or if you could afford it the 700r4. With the 700 you'll get a lower first gear plus an overdrive gear.
I wouldn't do 425 horse on the TH350 without giving it at least a little help. Shift kit, cooling etc. Keep in mind you're probably going to be beating the hell out of it with a stall converter too
