Tint Removal

1281 Views 16 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Devilyaka
A previous owner sprayed some kind of dark tint on all the windows of my car. I've got some windows clean but it's taken a lot of time and effort. It's very hard to scrape and lacquer thinner barely touches it. Trying to get down at the bottom of the windshield/dash pad is particularly hard. I'm even considering removing the front and rear glass so I can get at it easier. Has anyone ever removed this stuff? What worked for you?

Thanks, but, that's for film applied to the windows. The tint on my windows was sprayed on like paint.

Unfortunate situation there. Can't say I have been in it. Razor blade scraper is the first thing I would reach for. Long reach ones are available for areas like over the dash. Whether removing the windshield would be prudent depends on several factors which I'm sure you've weighed in your head. That sucks pretty hard that someone spray tinted a windshield, though. Wow!
I don't know if this will work on really dark tint but it has for me on lighter tint, try denatured alcohol it has done the job for me.

hth
The tint is absurdly dark too. It reminds me of the old Cheech and Chong skit where they're smoking a joint in the car.

Chong - "Hey man, how do you like my tinted windows? The cops can't see in."

Cheech - "Yeah man, but you can't see out!"

I can't imagine driving this car after dark.
I saw on one forum where a guy mentioned using brake cleaner.
I tried the following with no success:

MEK
Perchlorethylene
Brake cleaner
Lacquer thinner
Denatured alcohol
Mineral spirits

I did have some success with the lacquer thinner and a lot of effort.
have you tried to contact a window tinter ? Crazy idea I know, but thinking they probable have done a removal before

Second you are about to screw up a paint job with the shot in the dark efforts being made.

Maybe try gently using some clean 000 or 0000 steel wool under the thinner rag.
Someone else suggest 0000 steel wool. I'll give that a try as well. Another suggestion was a fast urethane reducer. I'm sure something is going to work.

Thanks for your concern about my paint job but the tint is on the inside of the windows and secondly, the car hasn't been painted yet.
Try acetone. Let us know what finally works.
Be careful scrapping as you can scratch the glass.
Steam sounds good plus I heard on hard to remove window tint film they sometimes use a product called cloudy ammonia which needs a lot of ventilation when using but it does work a treat with film.

Best of luck.
Someone suggested I try a fast urethane reducer. That was the trick. I put it in a spray bottle, covered what needed to be protected (yes, I wore a mask) and sprayed it on. I let it set for about a minute, wet it a second time and went to work. The scraper then took almost all of it off fairly easily. It left what almost looked like a stain on the glass. A second spray and some rubbing took almost all of that off but some fine steel wool was needed in a few spots.

The windows are clean!!! That was one crappy job I'm glad to have behind me. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
I'm glad to hear you found the fix and thanks for posting.
Consider taking your car to a professional tint removal service to avoid any potential damage to the windows or interior.
That can definitely be a difficult and time-consuming process. I haven't personally removed tint before, but I've heard that using a steamer can help loosen the adhesive and make it easier to scrape off. You could also use a heat gun to warm up the tint and make it easier to peel off. Just be sure to wear gloves and eye protection if any small pieces of tint or adhesive fly off.
