I have smoked the 9in ford rear axle that i installed under my 55 willys.I dont have any spares.So i checked out a rear axle from a toyota truck..6 lugs..so i will finally have matching rims on the back.And it has disc brakes on it..on all 4 corners i will have disc brakes,And the rear axle appears to be as strong as the 9in im impressed! its strong enough for my purposes anyways..the only issue i have with it,Is the final drive ratio,Its got 3.45's hhmmm that seems a bit steep for a stock 302 ford with an FMX automatic.Its my daily driver/work truck.Im curious as to what my engine rpms will be at 60-70mph..i dont have money to buy another rear axle or buy aftermarket ring/pinion.But i can trade the toyota axle for another toyota rear axle but it has drum brakes..i really really want the rear discs.So before i lay down the money for new seals,bearings,calipers/rotors etc if the rpms were 'liveable' i would keep the disc brake rear axle.And then do what i can to reduce rpms further with different sized rims/tires..anyone? anyone?..yeah i suck at math

Yota axles use drop out centers, but they are not equal to a 9". IIRC there is an 8" center section, and an 8.8" center section, and you can't tell them apart from the outside. The 8.8" would be about as strong as you would need, as they have been known to hold up to SBC swaps

Toyota wheels are hub centric rather than lug centric. This means that the Toyota wheel rests primarily on the center flange that protrudes from the axle. You'll want to get wheels for your Toyota rear end that are compatible.

wow! the internet is an amazing thing..im not much of a computer guy so maybe something as simple as that calculator seems alot easier way to do things..by simply hitting a few keys.3000rpm at 70mph for a stock 302 ford??yikes!! thats just about all its capable of hahaha..time to start looking for a ifferent rear axle

Or swap the FMX out for an AOD ;)

Yeah,i would love to swap out the FMX for an AOD,But the engine/trans im using was a factory rebuild with very low miles on it,And i couldnt justify buying another transmission when i had a perfectly good one already.I think i may have found another toyota rear axle,This one has 2.80.Its a young kid who really wants steeper gearing for his own project.If i did find an AOD to use,which flexplate,starter etc would i need to run it behind a stock rebuilt 1979 302? And which AOD?..from what i can find out about the AOD type transmission,there is the plain AOD and the AODE.

1988 to 1993 have the improved lubrication and valve body and are non computer, one from a Mustang would be a good donor they seem to show up on craigslist for decent prices since the T-5 swaps have gotten popular, you will need this: Ford SFI Flexplate 164 Tooth 28 oz - 289 302 351 C4 AO - KMJ Performance to have the correct flexplate since your 302 is 28 oz balance the later AOD's were 50oz.Lokar makes a T.V. cable that is an EZ install not much else needed.If you keep the disc brake rear you now have with the AOD it will come off the line quick and cruise at 70 about 2200 RPM.About perfect for MPG cruising.

Now im drooling!! uughh i have not kept up with the current or latest trends in the muscle car,street rod etc world..i do love the old cars and trucks,But i could never seem to have enough money for the 'family car' and a toy too.So any of my vehicles i usually built,it was cheaper than a payment,it was cool and i had spares for everything..but i never strayed from the basics.I kept running 302,289,351w all with the C4 or C6, a truck 4spd etc..and i never went 'modern' the most modern i ever got was adding 'Pertronix Ignitor' to my engines..i didnt bother with the later 5.0 fuel injection,AOD etc..the newer stuff jusy seemed a headache and besides i had spares.But now im seriously low on the spares and i really have to begin looking at later drivetrains..2200rpm at 65-70?? andwith the gear ratio i have,Plenty of low end grunt so i can still use the truck for work. WOW! my dad would have loved ro see discs on all 4 corners and an automatic w overdrive...now im really wishng i hadnt turned down good deals on later drivetrains..i could even toy around with 3.55,3.73 or even 3.91 that in a 1970 boss 9in rear axle i been saving for my 65 falcon convertible

Rear end swap.

What do you mean by "smoked my 9 inch rear end"? Break a Pinion, axle bearing, or? If you did not destroy the housing, it would probably be cheaper to rebuild the diff and replace whatever else broke than doing the switch. Toyota does make good rear ends but I don't see how this could be a cost effective swap compared to rebuilding the Ford 9".

I need a new ring and pinion,All the bearings,seals,brake shoes etc.And as the truck is sitting on a mazda frame,I have 6 lug rotors in the front..the 9in is a the small 5 lug pattern,I want 6 lugs in the rear.I dont think there's enough meat on the lug plate to put 6 lugs safely on the 9in.With the toyota rear axle,its low mileage,disc brakes and six lugs..it was free.So the cost f rebuilding the entire 9in doesnt seem to be the way to go..not when i have a nice rear axle already that i will put seals,calipers and pads on.Making it fit will be the headache simply due to the fact its heavy and cumbersome..but i have tools

Ahh..mmm..Well,long story it begins with a used 9in axle of unkown condition or mileage,add bad very bad pinion angle,2 bent rims,2 leaking rear axle seals 1,700 miles from home,the spare parts ammo can is sitting in my garage no money for anything except gasoline to get home,And couple of temper tantrums taken out on said 9in rear axle,There you have it,Smoked 9in:spank:

The axles on the Toyota are actually pretty stong.. If you want the third member to live you need to keep higher gears in the third member.410/456 seem to hold up pretty good. If you do to 488/513/529/571 your begging for breakage.

The toyota rear axle looks pretty stout for my purposes,I dont think i will be asking it to launch me into outer space,or get me down the 1/4 mile in 10 seconds.Its my work truck.The only thing i dont like is the steep gear ratio.im looking at darn close to 3000rpm at 60mph.thats winding up too high too quick.But i will run it til i can dig up the cash to get a different ratio installed.I would like to keep my running gear all ford,But free rear axles,strong built with disc brakes is nothing to get picky about..i like idea of disc brakes at all 4 corners..something i cant get in a 9in without spending shameful amounts of money.Believe me,if i had the extra cash i would go whole hog and buy me a nice currie 9in rear axle with disc brakes and the 'works'...actually i would buy 2 because my falcon convertible has asked santa for one too!..yeah i stopped asking Santa myself cuz he's a ***** and wont give me one in my stocking
