I need some help decoding, my dad bought back in 2001 an used 305 boat engine. Without really knowing what he really bought, so I do some stuff on that engine but decoding is another story. The engine code is: 355909 and the date code is: D 29 77 I will put an picture down below. But the stamping goes as: T 0 5 l 8 7 MB and the code from the heads is:378450 this is causing some trouble and at least the code on the waterpump: 3839175 and the date code: L 23 7 (I’m certain that this waterpump is not original) I will put picture’s down below

The 355909 is a mid to late1970’s casting for the 262, 267 and 305 engines. The 378450 head is the same spec as the block.

The "44915" stamping is not factory, someone has added that string of numbers.
Could have been the boat hull assembler, could be the engine has been rebuilt and that is a machinist shop invoice number, or something like that.

Everything else points to 1977 305".
It shares casting numbers with 262" and 267", but here the year date code is key......the 262" was 1975-76 and the 267" wasn't even introduced until 1979.....thus leaving any 909 casting block with a 1977 date code can only be a 305 that year.

I didn't have any luck with the "7MB" suffix code, could not find it listed but most lists are car and trunk predominantly and are often missing a lot of industrial or marine codes.

"T0518" is Tonowanda Engine Plant (T), the 0518 is assembly date, mm/dd, 05/18 is May 18th.

Thanks for the answers!

I knew it was from tonawanda and from 1977, but that suffix code brought me in doubt. I did not knew that 44915 was not factory, I will go further with searching for that code but I have a strong feeling this engine is an Chris Craft 305K because it turns counter clockwise and has about the same color.

Is that one of those that the crank is stationary and the block rotates around that?
