What you're asking is certainly POSSIBLE. It's not, however, easy OR common.

IMO, the two most important issues are A)Budget (you WILL have enough money to complete the project and it won't be a trivial amount) and B) "Pick a horse and RIDE it!" That is, establish the path you want to take to get you "threre", and STICK TO IT!

Such a build is pretty "broad" in scope, and may be a little TOO "involved" for a thread.

But first things first. What "cores" do you have?

It'll probably be at least 10 grand for the engine alone. Another 3-5 for the rest of the drivetrain and another 3-5 for suspension and chasis stiffening.

So do you have 20 grand to throw at this project?

These threads usually stop there.

You better get a Dart 400 block or heavy duty bowtie block and a 400 forge crank and 5.7" or 6.0" Forge rods, because the stock 400 will blow to pieces.

406 cubes=4.155x 3.75?
Quality heads dart/afr 227 23 degree, they will flow 225 ish with 75-80% of that on the exhaust side.rocker shafts(offset) 1.6 intake/1.5 exhaust. solid roller cam,[email protected] 50 int/268 @ 50 exhaust,108/108. You might need a reduced diameter cam depending on what rods you use.Crower or better forged crank and rods. 10.75 CR forged pistons, like wiseco. dart/mitchel block. deep pan, vacuum pump.crank fired ignition preferred, with limiter.victor jr 850 HP,regulator,pump,1/2 inch fuel line. basic parts list. dont buy any thing thats not premium quality. zero balance, not under balance, sfi damper like fluid,,,Steel light weight fly wheel if stick car,sfi approved of course. this combination should make 600 hp from 6800 to 7200.
the block needs to be fully machined, or checked for deck/squared, typical race engine blue printing.Im hoping you know all the little details

also,,,depending on cars weight/gearing etc, A step header is worth looking into. 1 3/4 " primary tubes stepped to 1 7/8" with a long 3" collector.

Excellent list! Probably $10k-$12k right there if you add block work.

He shouldn't need a small base circle cam with a 3.75" crank, even with an h-beam rod.

thank you joelster for the comment.I agree that 12K would be a fair price for those parts and machine work. Those parts would also last and should be vary reliable.

Don't waste your money on a vic jr. Get the super vic, bigger carb, and ati balancer. Id get a good cam grinder to spec you the cam for your combo, you may be able to go a hair smaller, and a little wider lsa.

I also think 15k is about right for that list of parts.

what ap72 said is true, A bigger manifold, bigger carb, bigger cam will make more HP. A super victor will flow enough air for a 9,000 rpm 406. a 1050 dominator carb is great,Bigger cams are the same price, wider lobe separation will have less overlap so compression will be an issue on pump gas.
lots of math involved, either way you 600 hp goal will be reached.

With so many proven 600+ HP 383s and 400s why does everyone react like it's Voodoo when someone asks? Or that it will cost a mint. Or that it won't be streetable?

My 383 made just short of 600HP, now with the 434 SHP bottom I have a very streetable 640 at the crank on pump gas. I have Airwolf 220e heads, 254/259*@0.050", .644/.660" 110* solid roller cam, ported Air Gap intake. SHP block with forged bottom. 11:1. Powerjection III fuel injection.

Here's a good combo similar to mine but with a hydraulic roller for the street on 93 oct. 640HP 400SBC.

Bryce sells it turn key, pan to carb with dizzy for $9K. You can build one yourself for a couple grand less.

Thanks shark, the specs I posted are similar.9k is a very good price.I used well known brand names when I built my engine and upgraded a few parts even more.I paid 10.7k before taxes. My engine makes max power at 6500 rpm.So the o.p. has a few ideas now, excellent.
