I have a Vertex magneto that I am installing on our sprint car and have a question. I have never worked with this type of ignition so it's new to me. My question is, the magneto cap has a direction arrow on it that shows the rotation. Does this arrow go towards the motor or the firewall or does it matter? Since the plug wires come out the side of the cap, I would like for the wires to be facing the firewall if possible. How does everyone have theirs? Pictures would be nice too.

If memory serves me right, the numbers on the mag cap are the order the mag fires not the engine firing order. so you have to compare your engine firing order to the mag and connect the wires as required.

Something like this:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 mag
1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 motor

and BTW do not grab the mag by the cap and spin the gear....haha don't ask how I know. Just thinking about it causes me to spazam...:spank:

Yep, you are correct. The numbers on the cap are not the firing order. I will be installing it on a SBC. BTW, you are too late on your suggestion or I'm too late on my question, done been zapped once. They work pretty good!! :mwink:

kill switch!

BE sure you install a kill switch. I had a friend running a vertex on his pumped 409, 8 carbs, the linkage stuck at wot, going 130 + towards town, my buddy riding with him kept saying push in the clutch, shift into neutral and let it blow. They went over the railroad tracks and it jarred the linkage loose.

Oh it has a kill switch. That ride sounds like a underwear changing event. I've been working on the throttle return all day just making sure things like that won't happen. It has a Hilborn Injection system.

The plug wires can exit the cap towards the firewall. I don't have the Vertex mag, but I have their electronic distributor which is outwardly similar. I have a picture of it in my project journal here:
