I know your pain!!! The wood in my Pontiac was shot when I got it. I took what was left and made patterns and laminated plywood to get the thickness right. So far it's solid as a rock but hasn't seen the road yet.

Steel it ?

I did a Model T touring, and The patterns were pretty good only a few pieces did not fit. I did a steel sub structure for the 31 Nash Roadster, I laid out a grid on a sheet of plywood to line up all the body panels , then braced the panels then started bending tubing,
Cboy's eBook has lots of good info when he made the Scratch build hotrod. My preference is wood for a restoration. steel tubing for anything else.
