I was given a new long water pump for my SBC build but do not know its application. Is there a means of identifying whether a water pump is standard or reverse rotation without breaking it open?

It's hard to identify without the pulley. On a pump mounted on a motor, if the water pump pulley is ribbed, it is a regular rotation. If the pulley is smooth, it is reversed rotation. I would find out what year it will fit, and ask your local parts house.

V belt setups are generally standard rotation
