I was thinking about putting a 9 inch rear in my51 f1 it has a 302/aod &
the original 51 rear with 3:73 gears in it.i might be able to pick up this old
65 ford f100 with a 352 (i think that is what it is) & 3 on the tree with a
9 inch rear for about $350-$400-the truck body is shot it has been sitting
for 3 yrs

Depends on what you call a good 9 inch. A good 9 inch to me would be around $2800. That gets you a nodular case with a Daytona pinion housing, 31 spline axles, a Dura Grip or Detroit Locker and a new heavy duty housing. Almost any 9 inch that you get from a salvage yard or out of something old is going to need a complete rebuild, and it's probably going to have 28 spline axles and a standard differential. Figure on at least $400 for the rebuld and another $900 or more to replace the axles and differential.

thats funny, I got a 9" out of a truck with a locker and 3.90'ish gears for 75 bucks
and drum to drum..
more than good enough for most builds..

Great buy. Yea, like you said, most people can get by with something stock. I like big blocks, 4 speeds and big tires, so stock isn't going to hold up to what I would put it through.
