I currently have a 14 inch diameter, 3 inch tall air filter on my mild 350 engine.

Is there some rule of thumb on how large the air filter needs to be based on engine size? I would like to go to a shorter air cleaner (2 inch) and get rid of my dropped base air cleaner so more of the carb is visible.

I'm not sure if there's a certain formula to what size breather you need to run, but on my 388 SBC Stroker I run a 10 inch diameter 1.5 inch thick Edelbrock breather with a K&N Filter Element, it looks awsome and it shows a bunch of carb, but before that I ran a 14 x 3 inch like yours after the switch I didnt notice any power decrease, I assume there was one but it was so small It was unnoticible......and any time i race or when power really counts I take it off anyway!!! so i say go with the 2 inch or smaller if you want no reason not to
