Hey! Nice First Post, Home-slice. Try Hemmings they always have everything. then specialty cat.s like brothers, or go online at gspp.com, but suicide will be tough, go buy a copy of street-rodder somewhere, because they are like 90% ads.

Suicide Hinges

I just picked up a pair od suicide hinges from AIRBAGIT.com best price Ive found and good and stout looking, shipping was high-er. they have bronze self lubricating bushings 4 per hinge. check out also suicidedoors.com they have a how to section that can give you some good ideas and their products are top notch as well as the service, mostly mini truck stuff, I bought a 4 link kit from them that is bulletproof and the price was great for the quality.

Im getting ready to do suicide doors on my 54 Chevy truck so if you want to wait and see how I screw it up then you will know what not to do. I will document the Install and post it at a later date, later could mean next week or next yaer hehe. If the stock hinges you have are are good its easier to reverse the front and rear pillars, my body work is already done and I didn't want to cut up the pillars and my stock hinges are junk and good used ones are kinda hard to find and a real pain to rebuild as the steel pins are tough to get out. good luck :thumbup:

Roadsire, I did my '53 Chevy 3100 with the same hinges you purchased and can give you a few tips before you begin. First spend a LOT of time making sure the hinges aren't too far apart or the curvature of the pillar will cause them to be out of vertical. Mine are set 10 7/8" apart which really was less than I wanted but works. Next, the hinges are in reality just a tad too wide to comfortably fit into the pillar without having to cut into the inner lip of the pillar as the hinge section pushes against the outside of the truck when trying to align the hinges to bring the hinge section parallel with the outside of the truck. I used a grinder and gently removed a little bit to cheat it over.

In hindsight I wish I had used Hagan's narrower suicide door hinges which would have simplified it a little.

After you've mocked it up, I'd suggest welding a piece of square tubing or similar to the two hinges to keep them aligned. I also "lined" the inner door panel with an extra sheet of 16 gauge to strengthen the pillar. I did the same on the door by welding square tubing at the end of the pockets after cutting them in and welded a sheet of 16 gauge between the two pockets on the door to stop the sheet metal from flexing (which it will do otherwise).

All in all it probably took me around 70 hours a door including the time spent on putting in the new bearclaw latches, suicide safety locks, solenoids and poppers and refinishing and smoothing the pillars on the doors and pillars. But it is well worth it I feel.

By the way I had considered swapping the original hinges from driver's doors to the passenger and vice versa, but the downfall really would have been that one of the doors would have ended up no longer being attached with the original hinges while lining up the new suicide hinges. Trust me it's a lot easier having the original hinges still support the door so you can square everything up. plus the amount of work that would have been involved in making your own attachments for the stock hinges to the new location in the door simply would not be worth it to my mind.

You took the words out of my mouth. The stock hinges are PERFECT for simply swapping them to the rear of the door. I have used Ford F-100 which are very similar as well.

Thanks for the help, Im chomping to get this cab finished, there was a lot of rust that had to be dealt with floors, cab corners inner and outer inner and outer cowls and I chopped it 3" so that took a bunch more time so 70 plus hours a door sounds about right, thanks for the help, nice looking truck there robin58.

Cut, Weld, Grind, Repeat :thumbup:

Suicide hinges started

I started the suicide hinge installation, check out my journal for the progress thanks for the help and suggestions.. I will update my journal with more detailed Info and tips later, if you are contenplating doing this job and want some tips or questions on how I did it just give me a shout and I will be happy to help you out. :thumbup:
